NJ's Story: Feeling at Home Again
When NJ arrived at BCHA George House in Plymouth, everything was unfamiliar.
Like many pets whose owners have experienced homelessness, adjusting to a new environment can be overwhelming. New sights, new sounds and new routines can all take time to get used to.
For owners rebuilding their lives, a beloved pet is often a constant source of comfort, companionship and stability. Making sure pets feel safe and settled during these periods of change is an important part of protecting that vital bond.
Through StreetVet's Accredited Hostel Scheme, NJ was welcomed with a bundle of essential supplies designed to support both wellbeing and comfort during the transition. Thanks to the generosity of our valued partners, NJ received nutritious food from Purina, cat litter from COCOCAT London and a variety of enrichment toys from James & Steel.
While these items may seem simple, they can make a world of difference.
Familiar food, a clean and comfortable toileting area and opportunities for play and stimulation all help pets adapt to new surroundings. They also provide reassurance to owners, allowing them to focus on accessing support and taking positive steps forward.
StreetVet's Accredited Hostel Scheme works with hostels and accommodation providers across the UK to help create pet inclusive environments where people do not have to choose between a safe place to stay and the companion they love. Alongside practical resources, the scheme provides guidance, training and ongoing support to help organisations welcome pets with confidence.
For NJ, receiving these essentials meant more than having food, litter and toys. It meant having the opportunity to settle into a new home environment with comfort, security and dignity. For NJ's owner, it meant knowing that their cherished companion was cared for every step of the way.
Stories like NJ's demonstrate why pet inclusive accommodation matters. By removing barriers and providing practical support, we can help keep people and their pets together at times when that bond is needed most.
Because every pet deserves to feel safe, cared for and at home.
