Meet Remix - A StreetVet Success Story

Remix, a young Shar Pei living with his owner in a pet-inclusive StreetVet Accredited Hostel, faced a life-threatening emergency in July 2025 when he was hit by a car after he slipped his lead near the temporary accommodation they had just moved into.

Thanks to quick action from staff at Coastline Housing, Chi Winder who were familiar with the StreetVet Accredited Hostel Scheme policies and Cornwall Pet Taxi, Remix received immediate help. This case beautifully illustrates the importance of StreetVet’s Accredited Hostel Scheme, frontline veterinary work, community support and the vital financial support provided by partners like Earth Animal, whose funding made Remix’s treatment and full recovery possible.

Only a few days after arriving at the hostel, Remix’s owner had not yet completed the full registration process with StreetVet.

When the accident occurred, a staff member at the StreetVet Accredited Hostel recognised the emergency and followed the StreetVet protocol, rushing Remix to a nearby clinic, Lamorna House Veterinary Clinic for urgent triage. StreetVet was notified straight away. Within 30 minutes, Remix was under the care of a veterinary team, receiving pain relief, diagnostics, and stabilisation. He arrived in shock, but conscious, with a clear fracture to his right forelimb.

Emergency Care & Surgery

After initial stabilisation, Remix was transferred to Edhen Vets, another StreetVet partner practice for overnight hospitalisation. His leg was supported with bandaging to minimise movement before undergoing surgical repair the following day.

Post-operative care: Remix had to be put on cage rest to support his recovery, and StreetVet were able to provided a large crate to ensure his safe recovery within the hostel room that Remix shared with his owner.

A week or so after his operation, Remix attended the closest StreetVet outreach clinic with his owner, where the team of volunteer vets and vet nurses removed his stitches and also restarted his vaccination cover. They gave him a full clinical examination and the surgical site was healing well, both Remix and his owner were doing brilliantly after such a traumatic experience just after moving into their new temporary accommodation. The StreetVet outreach team continued follow-up support and remained in contact for several months throughout Remix’s recovery journey.

How partner support made it possible

Remix’s case required extensive treatment across multiple veterinary practices, and the costs included:

• Emergency triage diagnostic imaging, specialist surgery,  hospitalisation pain relief medications, and follow-up appointments Rehabilitation support equipment (e.g., recovery crate)

Total Cost: Nearly £3,000

This life-saving veterinary intervention was only possible because StreetVet could draw on Earth Animal’s dedicated funding to support patients that are residents within a StreetVet Accredited Hostel. Funding from Earth Animal, one of StreetVet's partners covered the full cost of Remix’s care and recovery. Our continued relationships with supporters like Earth Animal ensures that pets like Remix, often the only source of security, stability, and unconditional love for owners who are experiencing homelessness, can receive the veterinary care and treatment they need and deserve.
