Hugo's Story
Hugo is a lively two year old dog who lives with his owner at Stonepillow in Chichester, one of StreetVet's accredited pet inclusive hostels.
Like many pets supported through the Accredited Hostel Scheme, Hugo is much more than a companion. He is a source of comfort, stability and unconditional support for his owner.
When Hugo suddenly began scratching at his head and lost interest in his food, his owner quickly realised something was not right. Any pet owner knows how worrying it can be when a beloved animal becomes unwell, but for those experiencing homelessness or living in temporary accommodation, accessing veterinary care can be particularly challenging.
Thankfully, because Stonepillow is part of StreetVet's Accredited Hostel Scheme, support was available when it was needed most. Through funding provided by Earth Animal, Hugo was able to be seen by a local veterinary practice for assessment and treatment.
The veterinary team diagnosed an ear infection and provided the care needed to help Hugo recover.
While an ear infection is a common condition, without timely treatment it can cause significant discomfort and may worsen over time. Early intervention meant Hugo could begin recovering quickly and avoid unnecessary suffering.
For Hugo's owner, knowing that support was available brought valuable peace of mind during a difficult time. Having access to pet friendly accommodation and veterinary care meant he could focus on the wellbeing of Hugo and make future plans without worrying about being separated from his much loved companion.
Today, Hugo is feeling much better. His appetite has returned, the scratching has stopped and he is back to his usual energetic self, enjoying life alongside his owner.
Stories like Hugo's demonstrate the real impact of pet inclusive accommodation. The Accredited Hostel Scheme helps ensure that pets can access essential veterinary care while their owners access the support they need. Together, these services protect the vital bond between people and their pets and remove barriers that might otherwise stand in the way of a more secure future.
Because no one should have to choose between getting help and staying with the companion they love.
