Born and raised in Edinburgh, after graduating from college Gail moved into TV production, working as a runner and all manner of low/no paid jobs as she learnt the craft of television.  

Now one of the UK’s most recognisable television personalities, Gail has enjoyed a successful career spanning children’s television, entertainment and broadcasting.  

Life has certainly been eventful for Gail Porter. For the best part of a decade, Gail was one of the most ubiquitous faces on British television, presenting legendary shows like Top of the Pops and The Big Breakfast. 

In 2004 Gail began presenting the paranormal TV series Dead Famous. It was during filming for the show that she began to suffer from alopecia totalis, causing her hair to fall out. The stress of this and the break-up of her marriage brought underlying mental health issues to the surface, ultimately leading her to be detained under the Mental Health Act. 

Alongside her professional achievements, she has been a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about her own experiences, helping to challenge stigma and encourage understanding. 

As a lifelong animal lover, Gail also has lived experience of homelessness, giving her a unique and deeply personal connection to StreetVet’s mission. Her compassion for both people and their pets makes her a powerful voice for the charity and the communities it supports. 

Gail said: 

“I’ve been famous, I’ve been homeless, and I’ve been sectioned with two guys who both claimed to be Jesus. I know first hand that homelessness can happen to anyone. The work StreetVet does is absolutely vital, supporting people and pets and I hope I can help them raise the funds and awareness to do even more of it.”
